Alfa Romeo Electrifies: Stelvio Quadrifoglio to Pack Nearly 1,000 Horsepower

Alfa Romeo enthusiasts and automotive enthusiasts alike have been eagerly anticipating the brand's next move in the realm of high-performance vehicles. Speculation has been rife about whether the upcoming Alfa Romeo models would continue the tradition of the iconic Quadrifoglio badge, known for its high-performance offerings.

Initially, there was hope that the smaller Tonale SUV would receive the Quadrifoglio treatment. Alfa Romeo's CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, had entertained the idea, driven by customer demand for a high-performance Tonale. However, Imparato recently revealed that this plan has been shelved. The challenge lay in the cost and CO2 emissions, particularly with stringent regulations in countries like France, where registering a car emitting more than 200g/km of CO2 incurs significant costs.

The focus has now shifted to the next new Alfa Romeo to carry the Quadrifoglio badge, which will be the forthcoming Stelvio all-electric SUV. Scheduled for a reveal in the summer, the Stelvio will introduce the STLA Large platform and be manufactured in Italy. Imparato hinted at the performance figures, suggesting that the current flagship Quadrifoglio version boasts 941bhp, with potential to reach 1,000PS (986bhp). This would make the Stelvio a powerhouse, potentially rivaling the Tesla Model X in terms of performance.

The transition to electrification isn't universally celebrated among enthusiasts, who often cherish the sound and experience of a combustion engine. Alfa Romeo, known for its driver-centric approach, is navigating this transition carefully. While the Stelvio's replacement is expected to be electric-only, reports suggest that the Giulia's successor may offer both electric and gasoline options, similar to the new Dodge Charger.
