Will Nissan Finally Join the Off-Road Party with a New Xterra?

The off-road revival is in full swing. Iconic SUVs like the Ford Bronco and Land Cruiser have returned in a blaze of glory, proving there's a lucrative market for adventurous vehicles. Nissan, however, has been a curious sideline observer, offering only a mildly rugged Pathfinder Rock Creek. But according to Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan Americas' Chief Planning Officer, a beloved off-road nameplate – the Xterra – could be making a comeback.

Pandikuthira hinted that the Xterra is being "very actively considered," with a key caveat: it would need to be a genuine off-roader, not just a pretender with knobby tires. He emphasizes "authenticity" and "serious truck capability," suggesting a focus on functionality over frills. This aligns with the original Xterra's no-nonsense approach, which endeared it to a loyal following despite its 2015 discontinuation.

The 2015 Xterra offered a punchy 4.0-liter V6 and both rear- and four-wheel drive configurations. For hardcore enthusiasts, the Pro-4X trim boasted serious hardware – skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, and Bilstein shocks for tackling tough terrain.

A new Xterra would likely target the Toyota 4Runner, mirroring the Frontier's strategy within the mid-size truck segment. Platform-wise, it could borrow from the existing Frontier, but with a design that blends Nissan's recent bold concepts with subtle nods to the classic Xterra. This balance between modern flair and heritage could be a winning formula.

While Nissan hasn't confirmed anything yet, the Xterra's potential return is a tantalizing prospect for off-road enthusiasts. If Nissan stays true to Pandikuthira's vision of an "authentic" and affordable Xterra, it could be a welcome addition to the reborn off-road scene.
