Safety Fears Unchecked: Will the Untested Cybertruck Put Drivers at Risk?

Jalopnik has reached out to the National Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, but they have informed them that there are currently no plans to test the Tesla Cybertruck for crash worthiness. Not every vehicle on the road is crash tested, and lower volume models, rare or expensive vehicles often slip under the radar of regulatory organizations. The NHTSA released its list of vehicles it plans to crash test for 2024 in December, and while several EVs made the cut (including VinFast models), the Tesla Cybertruck was not one of them.

Tesla implied crash testing the truck in a video it showed last November during an event surrounding the initial delivery of the first Cybertrucks. However, since the vehicle's release, there has been at least one crash involving a Cybertruck, which resulted in minor injuries to the driver of the truck itself. No independent crash testing of the Tesla Cybertruck appears to be on the cards, which will do little to dispel the thoughts of many believing the stainless steel-bodied truck is not up to the lofty safety standards of other Tesla models.

People have been concerned about the shape and the apparent lack of traditional crumple zones since the Cybertruck was presented as a prototype more than four years ago. During the unveiling of the production-ready truck in November last year, Tesla showed it being crash-tested in-house but didn't provide any crash test data, like the ones we're used to seeing from independent tests. Unfortunately, no further crash testing of the Cybertruck is on the cards, at least for now.
