Technician's Joyride Allegedly Damages Customer's WRX in Learning Mishap

A lawsuit filed against Dan Perkins Subaru in Milford, Connecticut, alleges that two technicians damaged a customer's beloved WRX during a joyride intended to teach one of them how to drive a manual transmission vehicle. Crandall Yopp Jr. claims that his "dream car" suffered significant harm when a younger technician repeatedly stalled the engine, ground the gears, and burned the clutch during the ill-fated lesson.

Yopp leased the WRX in April 2023 and brought it to Dan Perkins Subaru for its second oil change in November of the same year. Despite instructing the service advisor not to wash the car to preserve its ceramic coating, the technicians allegedly took it for a spin after completing the oil change. The lawsuit alleges that they disregarded Yopp's request and even visited a car wash afterward in an attempt to conceal the joyride.

Upon returning to the dealership, the technicians, according to Yopp's complaint, encountered efforts to cover up the damage they caused, including attempts to straighten a mangled front license plate. Despite these efforts, Yopp noticed swirls in the car's paint and other imperfections upon inspecting it at home.

The lawsuit seeks damages and attorney fees for various offenses, including violation of Connecticut's consumer protection law, civil theft, negligence, and breach of bailment. Dan Perkins Subaru has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the allegations.
