Smart Signs Aim to Improve Driver Behavior in King County

In an effort to curb unsafe driving behaviors, King County has launched a pilot program featuring innovative "SmartSigns." These signs, equipped with sensors using microwave and infrared technology, can detect various infractions such as distracted driving, speeding, or not wearing a seatbelt. When a violation is detected, the sign will display a message tailored to the offense, such as "Put your phone down" or "Slow down." Conversely, if a driver is behaving safely, they will be greeted with a smiley face.

The CEO of SaferStreet Solutions, Tim Hogan, stated that these signs can reduce distracted driving by up to 40% when stationed in one area over a four-week period. The program aims to leverage these signs' presence to continually remind drivers to prioritize safety, potentially making a significant impact on driving behavior.

Target Zero King County and the Washington Traffic Safety Coalition organized this initiative, citing the alarming statistics of over 900 serious injuries or fatalities on King County roads last year alone. By strategically placing four SmartSigns in 12 locations across King County, including Seattle, Fairwood, Pacific, Algona, and others, the program seeks to create a safer driving environment throughout the community.

While this is the first implementation of such technology in King County, organizers hope to expand the program to other parts of Washington state in the future. The Washington Traffic Safety Coalition, in particular, sees this as a crucial step in reminding drivers to stay focused and drive safely, especially in light of increasing distracted driving incidents across the country.
