BMW Unveils Color-Changing i5 Flow NOSTOKANA at Frieze Los Angeles [W/Gallery+Video]

The BMW Group is making a splash at the Frieze Los Angeles art fair with the world premiere of the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. This unique vehicle blends cutting-edge technology with the artistic vision of South African icon Esther Mahlangu.

The i5 Flow NOSTOKANA takes color-changing car technology to a new level. Sections of the car are wrapped in special film developed with E Ink, allowing for dynamic electronic animations. This innovation pays homage to Mahlangu, who was the first woman and first African artist to design a BMW Art Car (the 12th) and whose work is known for its vibrant colors and bold patterns.

The electrophoretic technology allows for a dazzling display of ever-changing colors on the car's surface, making it a rolling work of art. The visual transformation is further amplified by a specially composed soundscape by Renzo Vitale, BMW Group's Creative Director, Sound.

This artistic marvel is a technological feat as well. The i5 Flow NOSTOKANA boasts a staggering 1,349 individually controlled sections of film.

Beyond the Los Angeles premiere, the i5 Flow NOSTOKANA is part of an ongoing BMW Art Car exhibition in South Africa, which runs until August 11th, 2024.

Art and automotive enthusiasts will have even more to experience at Frieze Los Angeles. BMW will also present Frieze Music in collaboration with Frieze, featuring a live performance by Sudan Archives at the Hammer Museum on February 29th.
